I really wasn't going to paint Eight Belles so soon since I had completed a fantasy painting right before the derby. But with lots of insistence, and finding the perfect head photo by Alysse Jacobs and racing photo by Amber Chalfin, I decided she needed to be so honored. With her flared nostrils and bright eye, she's eager to run; she looks so alive! I didn't add any rail or track, because where she is now, there isn't any need. She can run all day, and when Willie Shoemaker saw her run by, he couldn't resist. "The Shoe" couldn't pass up riding such an incredible filly with so much heart and determination. The 8 bells came to me as I was painting, along with keeping the red 8 on her blanket. I put my heart and soul in this tribute to this great filly! Ring Free, Eight Belles!
